Royals Fall to Lindsey Wilson 6–4 at Home
KNOXVILLE, TN— The Royals dropped a midweek contest Wednesday afternoon at Russell Morgan Field, falling 6–4 to Lindsey Wilson. The loss moves Johnson to 17–2 on the season, snapping the team's 14-game winning streak.
Johnson jumped out to an early lead, plating a run in each of the first two innings. In the opening frame, Travis Hobbensiefken drove in JJ Menesini with an RBI groundout to give the Royals a 1–0 advantage. The Royals added another run in the second when Luke Wilson brought home Andrew Wilford with a groundout, pushing the lead to 2–0.
Lindsey Wilson responded in the third inning with two runs to even the game before Johnson briefly regained the lead in the fourth. Wilson delivered again at the plate, singling and advancing to third on an error while driving in Grayson Shehan to make it 3–2.
The Blue Raiders took control in the fifth inning with a two-run single from Vincent Sizemore to reclaim the lead at 4–3. Lindsey Wilson later added insurance runs in the seventh on a solo home run and in the eighth on an RBI groundout.
Johnson pulled within one in the bottom of the seventh when Izaak Fernandez doubled to left field to score Braden Frank, cutting the deficit to 5–4. However, the Royals were unable to complete the comeback over the final two innings.
The Royals finished with six hits in the contest. Wilson led the offense with two hits and two RBIs, while Fernandez also recorded two hits including the RBI double. Johnson showed patience at the plate with nine walks, but struck out 10 times and left 12 runners on base.
Five Royals pitchers saw action in the game. Asher Abrahams started and allowed two runs over three innings. Kilian deMayo, Brandon Bell, Andrew Uharriet, and Kaleb Townsend combined to finish the game on the mound.
Following the game, head coach Dave Serrano emphasized that the difference came down to execution in the fundamentals.
"It's always tough to lose, but at the end of the day it's about fundamentals," Serrano said. "I don't think fundamentally we played good baseball tonight. Yesterday I thought we played good fundamental baseball and were well-deserving of that victory, but today's a new day."
Serrano noted that the loss served as a reminder of the small details required to maintain success over a long season.
"We weren't real good on strike one today and we swung and missed too much," Serrano said. "We can also become cleaner on the bases with some of the decisions we're making and we have to do a better job taking care of the baseball."
Despite the result, Serrano praised the team's competitiveness and unity throughout the season.
"The biggest shining light for me is that this team has a will to win," Serrano said. "They're different together. They're unified, and that's pulled us through some tough times. But we've got to continue to tighten up the little things and get back to playing the fundamental baseball we're striving for."
The Royals will look to bounce back this weekend as they return to Russell Morgan Field for a three-game non-conference series against Bethel University, beginning Saturday.
