February 7, 2026
The Johnson University Royals men's tennis team opened its season with a hard-fought 5–2 victory over the Covenant College Scots, showcasing depth, resilience, and team energy from start to finish in an indoor matchup at the McCallie Tennis Courts.
Johnson University set the tone early by securing the doubles point. Lennart Kleeberg and Gabor Szabo earned a convincing 6–2 win on Court 2, and the point was clinched shortly after when Miguel Sanchez Loo and Levi Lubbers battled to a 6–4 victory, giving the Royals an early 1–0 advantage heading into singles play.
Covenant responded in singles by evening the match with a win on Court 2, but the Royals quickly answered. Sanchez Loo delivered a gritty performance on Court 3, pulling out a 6–2, 2–6, 10–2 win in a third-set tiebreaker to put Johnson back in front. The Scots tied the match once again with a third-set victory on Court 1, setting up a tense stretch in the middle of the lineup.
The momentum shifted decisively in favor of the Royals as the depth of the lineup began to show. Igor Parolis earned a key straight-sets win on Court 5, 6–3, 7–5, before Gabor Szabo followed with a composed 6–4, 6–2 victory on Court 6 to clinch the team win for Johnson University.
With the match already decided, Benjamin Barrios closed the afternoon in dramatic fashion on Court 4, fighting through three sets for a 6–4, 5–7, 10–5 win to complete the 5–2 victory.
After the match, Head Coach Hale emphasized the collective nature of the win, saying, "This was a complete team effort from the very first ball. Getting the doubles point was huge for us, and it gave us confidence heading into singles. We're a deep lineup, and today you saw that strength across multiple courts. I was especially proud of the energy and the way our guys were cheering and supporting each other from beginning to end. That kind of culture and togetherness makes a difference, and it played a big role in today's result."
The Royals will be back on court this Friday, February 13 as they travel to take on Lincoln Memorial University.
