Bio
Joey McCown enters his second season with Johnson University. The Alcoa, Tennessee native joined the Royals after serving as the pitching coach, outfield coach, and recruiting assistant at Augusta University. During his time at Augusta and previously at UVA Wise, he helped develop multiple players who advanced to professional baseball, including Gabe Wurtz (Tucson Saguaros, Pecos League) and Tyler Blaum (Joliet Slammers, Frontier League).
McCown began his coaching career at Alcoa High School before moving on to Maryville College as pitching coach from 2011–13. In 2013, he served as head coach of the Rowan Patriots in the All American Collegiate Baseball League, leading the team to a league championship and a 24–7 record. He then became a graduate assistant at Lincoln Memorial University, working with the bullpen, outfielders, first base, and recruiting. His tenure included the 2018 conference championship and two NCAA regional appearances (2018, 2019). McCown also played a key role in the development of several future pros, including Ethan Elliott (10th-round pick, San Diego Padres), Matt Mullenbach (New York Mets signee), and Christopher Salvey (West Virginia Power).
McCown holds a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from East Tennessee State University and an MBA from Lincoln Memorial University. He resides in Knoxville with his wife, Dr. Melanie McCown, their children Mila and Jude, and their 10-year-old Boxer, Denali.
